five New Yorkers for their military service during his 2003 Veterans' Recognition
Ceremony at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum on Wednesday, Nov. 19th. "We
owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the men and women who are serving abroad,
who risk their lives every day and endure long absences from their families,"
Thompson said. "We owe them more than words; we owe them respect, honor and
the support they need to come home safe and soon. "Tonight, we pay
tribute to all of the men and women of our armed forces, those who served in the
past and those who are serving now. We honor the memory of those who have been
lost. We also recognize the contributions of those who have dedicated their lives
to serving the needs of veterans and their families." During the event,
Thompson delivered a special tribute to the men and women who served in the Gulf
War. He also presented a Distinguished Service Award to Arnold Fisher, Chairman
of the Intrepid Foundation. "Mr. Fisher has provided pivotal support
and leadership on behalf of veterans and their families," Thompson said.
"He has championed the development of educational resources that encourage
a greater appreciation of sea, air, and space history." Comptroller
Thompson also honored: Colonel Eileen Bonner, AUS (Ret.), Fort Hamilton Garrison
Retiree Council; Vincent McGowan, Assistant Executive Director, Battery Park City
Parks Conservancy; Job Mashariki, Founder and CEO, Black Veterans for Social Justice;
and, Rev. William G. Kalaidjian, Chaplain, Bronx Veterans Administration Medical
Center.
