Responding to inquiries about the Astoria water main break, New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today detailed the process by which people can file claims against the City of New York .
Since the February 16th incident, Thompson has dispatched staffers to the site of the Astoria water main break to attend community meetings, speak with residents, distribute claim forms, and answer questions.
Claims against the City of New York are filed through the Comptroller's Office Bureau of Law & Adjustment. Under Section 50-e of the General Municipal Law, claims against the City of New York must be served personally or by Certified or Registered Mail with the New York City Office of the Comptroller, 1 Centre Street, Room 1225, New York, N.Y., 10007, within ninety (90) days from the date of the occurrence.
In the Astoria case, that would mean that a claim must be filed by May 17, 2005 .
Anyone wishing to file a claim can receive forms by either contacting the Comptroller's Community Action Center at (212) 669-3916 or action@comptroller.nyc.gov .
Forms also can be downloaded (in the Adobe .pdf format) from the Comptroller's web site at www.comptroller.nyc.gov . The specific type of claim form that should be used in the Astoria incident pertains to "Property Damage for Water Damage or Loss."
