Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. is strengthening his prevailing wage campaign by distributing new flyers to encourage workers on City projects to report any instances in which they are not receiving their legal wages.
The Comptroller is issuing the flyers to educate workers, who are hired under public works contracts, on their rights under the State's prevailing wage laws. The Comptroller sets the prevailing wage rate and enforces laws to support fair pay for work performed in New York City .
The flyers - which are in Spanish and English - identify the minimum hourly wages that workers should be receiving in a variety of fields, including bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, security guards, and sheet metal workers.
"We've helped hundreds of workers get back wages owed to them," Thompson said, urging workers to contact his office's Bureau of Labor Law, "if you work in one of these jobs and you believe your employer is not complying with the law."
Just last week, the Comptroller announced that his office reached a settlement in which Netexit, Inc. paid nearly $1.5 million to 16 employees who were underpaid for work at 49 Human Resources Administration sites throughout the City. That settlement was the second highest ever in the City's history in a prevailing wage case.
"Most contractors are honest and law-abiding, who pay workers properly and ensure that workers are treated fairly," Thompson said. "But there are a few who knowingly take advantage of workers and expect that they won't say anything about it. And to those unscrupulous contractors, I say that we will come after you."
Since Comptroller Thompson has been in this office he has successfully resolved 612 prevailing wage cases (including the Netexit case), collecting nearly $5.9 million in underpayments and more than $520,000 in penalty fines.
