New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. speaks at a rally sponsored by Teamsters Local 237 to protest the cuts in federal funding for the New York City Housing Authority on Thursday, May 01, 2008. |
Addressing several hundred union members at a downtown Manhattan rally, New York City Comptroller William C. Thomson Jr. today denounced federal cuts to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).
Thompson joined Teamsters Local 237 President Greg Floyd, clergy, local elected officials, and public housing workers and residents at a rally adjacent to City Hall to criticize the federal government for a lack of consistent financial support.
“The Bush Administration has turned their backs on us, but we will continue to let our voices be heard,” Comptroller Thompson said. “These cuts are a blow to thousands across the city, and I am here to tell you that I am behind this cause. We all deserve to have a roof over our heads, and not to be forced out into the streets. It’s not acceptable.”
Over the last eight years, NYCHA has seen its budget slashed by $611 million, prompting workers to lose their jobs, community centers to be closed, and vital services to be cut.
