New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement after a new report, “Are New York City’s Public Schools Preparing Students for Success in College?”, by former Associate Dean for Collaborative Programs at CUNY John Garvey was issued by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform:
“As this new report indicates, the City is not fully preparing our children for college. While the City touts higher graduation rates, many of our recent public school graduates are having to take remedial courses when they get there.
According to the report, CUNY’s basic skills proficiency tests of public school graduates entering in fall 2008 show that 15 percent of Bachelor’s Degree candidates and 70 percent of Associate Degree candidates were not proficient in basic skills. Further, while over 90 percent of our graduating students met CUNY requirements for English, only 19 percent met the math requirements.
These are shameful results that demonstrate that too many of our students are graduating from the public school system without basic skills. The Department of Education must stop failing our children and begin to take necessary steps to better prepare them for college and their futures.”
