NYC Comptroller Stringer Announces Appointment Of Devon Puglia As New Director Of Communications

October 18, 2016

(New York, NY) — New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer today announced the appointment of Devon Puglia, former Communications Director for Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy, as his new Director of Communications.

“We want to take our communications efforts to new heights – and we want government to be more transparent than ever before. That’s why I’m so pleased to announce this appointment. Devon brings a wide range of experience to our office as we work to communicate with residents of the City in new and innovative ways. I have no doubt we will continue to do that going forward,” New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer said.

As Director of Communications, Mr. Puglia will be responsible for overseeing both day-to-day media operations as well as long-term planning and messaging. He will be responsible for driving media outreach campaigns from the Comptroller’s Office to communities throughout New York City, working with stakeholders in all five boroughs to improve City services.

Mr. Puglia has served in Gov. Dan Malloy’s office since 2014, acting as the chief spokesman for the State of Connecticut while managing communications for dozens of agencies, more than 45,000 employees, and all media execution for Connecticut’s Executive Branch.

During his time there, Mr. Puglia played an instrumental role in major national news stories, including the Governor’s first-in-the-nation travel ban to Indiana following passage of its Religious Freedom Restoration Act, as well as the Governor’s announcement of his intention to sign an Executive Order banning those on the terror watch list from buying firearms – an announcement that helped fuel a national conversation around “no-fly, no-buy.” This year, when other states had refused to accept refugees, he played a central role in the Governor’s face-to-face welcome for a Syrian refugee family that had been diverted to Connecticut after being denied entry to Indiana. That helped earn Governor Malloy the 2016 Profile in Courage Award, one of the highest national honors.

Prior, Mr. Puglia served as Communications Director for the Connecticut Democratic Party. He had previously served as Press Secretary for the New York City Department of Education – serving as head spokesman for the Chancellor and the New York City school system – as well as a video producer for the now-defunct The Daily.

This week will be Mr. Puglia’s first full week at the Comptroller’s Office.
