DOC DASHBOARD UPDATE: NYC Comptroller Releases New Monthly Data on Department of Correction
New York, NY – The Office of the New York City Comptroller released its monthly update to the Department of Correction (DOC) Dashboard, available here.
Key monthly DOC metrics show:
- DOC housed 7,095 individuals as of April 1, 2025, 258 more people than the previous month. The DOC incarcerated population continues to surpass the borough-based jail capacity by more than double.
- 2,113 individuals entered DOC custody in March 2025, 276 more people than the previous month.
- DOC discharged 1,844 people in March 2025, 141 more people than the previous month.
- The average length of a person detained in DOC custody was 64 days in March, 11 days less than in February.
- DOC failed to produce 108 of 7,746 individuals in custody for a scheduled court appearance in March 2025, 42 fewer people than the previous month.
- 1 out of 7,037 individuals delivered to court did not have a recorded time of arrival, 5 fewer people than the previous month.
Staff metrics include:
- The correction officer-to-incarcerated person ratio is 0.83 as of March 2025.
- 6% of staff were out sick in January 2025 (the last time the Comptroller’s Office received data), no change from the previous month.
- 5% of staff were out on medically restricted leave in January 2025.
Incidents of violence in March 2025:
- 60 assaults on staff, 5 more than the previous month.
- 16 slashings and stabbings occurred, 0 more the previous month.
- 609 fights, 67 more than the previous month.
- 1,869 incidents involving the use of force occurred in FY25 Q2, 178 more incidents than the previous quarter.
- At least 5 people died on Rikers in 2025.
The Comptroller’s dashboard, first published in August 2022, monitors pervasive issues in the City’s jails, including staff absenteeism, missed medical appointments, and incidents of violence among detained people and staff. It also tracks the jail population every month and length of stay. The Comptroller’s Office publishes data to this dashboard monthly to provide increased transparency and accountability over the City’s jail system.
