New York City Comptroller Brad Lander Criticizes eBay’s Closure of Unionized Syracuse Facility, Relocation to Right-to-Work State
New York, NY — New York City Comptroller Brad Lander released the following statement criticizing eBay’s decision to close a Syracuse facility of subsidiary TCGplayer and move the work to a right-to-work state during collective bargaining negotiations:
“As long-term shareholders, we believe the wellbeing and fair treatment of workers is fundamental to sustainable business performance and long-term shareholder value. For months, we have urged eBay to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the workers at its TCGplayer subsidiary, but instead eBay is preparing to shift operations to a non-union facility in a right-to-work state. This decision raises concerns about the company’s commitment to responsible labor practices and the potential reputational, operational, and legal risks associated with union-busting tactics.
“Displacing skilled workers will erode institutional knowledge and trust—a move that may harm employees and shareholders. We urge eBay to reverse this decision, engage meaningfully with the union representing TCGplayer’s New York employees, and prioritize sustainable labor practices that align with its global commitments.”

For nearly two years, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander has repeatedly called for the company to address investor concerns regarding its labor relations. Following eBay’s July 2024 announcement of an assessment and a revision of its policy, Comptroller Lander urged eBay to expeditiously reach a collective bargaining agreement. In December 2024, following the completion of the workers’ rights assessment, Comptroller Lander again called for the company to “redouble its efforts to come to a collective bargaining agreement promptly.”
