Today, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander released the Annual Report on the Operations of the Audit Bureau for Fiscal Year 2023. The report highlights the completion of 30 audits, reviews, and special reports aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness in city government operations.
“Our auditing process is about making sure New Yorkers are getting government services that are well managed and accountable,” said Comptroller Brad Lander. “This comprehensive review reflects the success of our audit team’s commitment to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and the pursuit of more effective government.”
To ensure ongoing accountability and transparency, the Comptroller’s Office tracks the outcomes from the Office’s audits of City agencies issued since January 1, 2022, via Comptroller Lander’s public recommendations tracker. Since its launch, 60.34% of all recommendations issued to agencies have been implemented, and an additional 2.53% have been partially implemented. Follow-up audits revealed improvements in services provided to New Yorkers, including enhanced oversight in crisis shelters, improved controls over inspectors’ performance, and strengthened enforcement of the City’s Paid Sick Leave Law.
To enhance accessibility, audit reports published on the Comptroller’s web site as of January 2023 include a “Report at A Glance”—a one-to-two-page snapshot of each audit’s goals and impacts presented in an easy to digest format. Additionally, all reports are now published in HTML to facilitate online translation into multiple languages.
The Comptroller has the authority to audit all matters relating to City finances. Under the New York City Charter, the Comptroller’s Bureau of Audit is required to conduct at least one audit of every City agency at least once every four years. In addition to tracking audit outcomes, the web site also invites members of the public to suggest agencies or programs for the Comptroller’s office to audit.
