January 14, 2014: NY-New YorkCity Comptroller Scott M. Stringer today announced three appointments to his Communications team, including Michael Nitzky, Senior Producer for Politics at NY1, as Director of Communications; Eric Sumberg, Press Secretary for New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, as Deputy Director of Communications and Press Secretary; and Carlota Fluxa, News Editor for The Wall Street Journal Americas, as Deputy Press Secretary.

“As Comptroller, my office has a responsibility to clearly communicate news and information to the public – and with full transparency,” Stringer said. “The three new appointees I am announcing to my Communications team today bring an impressive blend of journalistic and governmental experience to this important task. They all share my commitment to progressive values and fiscally responsible governance that broadens economic opportunity for all New Yorkers.”

As Director of Communications, Michael Nitzky will be responsible for framing and implementing both daily and long-range communications strategies for the Comptroller’s Office. He will be in charge of managing external and internal messaging, driving media outreach campaigns from the Comptroller’s Office to communities throughout the city, and working with stakeholders in all five boroughs to convey information about the Comptroller’s policies and proposals.

Nitzky has been Senior Producer for Politics at NY1 since January, 2008, and helped transform “Inside City Hall” from a local public affairs program into New York City’s premier political television program. Nitzky started with the political unit in 2004 as a producer. He has helped create new segments for the program and put an emphasis on interviews that focused on issues New Yorkers care about, everything from income inequality to Hurricane Sandy recovery. Besides booking politicians and prominent advocates, he also produced live events including the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Democratic and Republican conventions, as well as the 2005, 2009 and 2013 mayoral races. Prior to that, he worked as a producer and assistant news director at WWTV (a CBS affiliate) in Michigan. Nitzky earned a BA degree in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science at Syracuse University.

As Deputy Director of Communications and Press Secretary, Sumberg will manage the Comptroller’s daily interactions with media representatives covering his office or seeking information about the City. He will coordinate press outreach to New Yorkers in all five boroughs–utilizing print, radio, TV and social media platforms–and help disseminate information about the Comptroller’s proposals and policies to the general public.

Sumberg has been Press Secretary for New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli since June 2013, and served as New York City Press Secretary from December 2010 to June 2013. He was chief spokesperson for the New York State Common Retirement Fund, New York State and Local Retirement System and the Office of the State Deputy Comptroller for the City of New York, with oversight over New York City MTA finances. He previously worked as Director of Communications for State Senator Thomas K. Duane. Sumberg earned a Master of Studies in history at the University of Oxford, and a BA in Political Science from Brown University.

As Deputy Press Secretary, Carlota Fluxa will handle media outreach to New York City’s Latino community and other duties. Since 2005, she has been a News Editor for The Wall Street Journal Americas, managing the production of the newspaper for 15 Latin American countries; supervising, coordinating and assigning stories to a team of 10 translators and graphic designers and a member of the daily story selection editorial team; appearing as an on-air commentator of business news in Spanish through a partnership with Mundo Fox.

Ms. Fluxa has also been an Associate Editor with el Mundo Newspaper in Boston, Mass., and an on-air reporter for Informativos Telecinco, a Spanish national news broadcast in Madrid, Spain. Ms. Fluxa earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences from Universidad Complutense in Madrid, and a Master of Arts in Integrated Journalism from Emerson College in Boston. She came to the United States from Spain in 2003 as a Fulbright Scholar.
