NYC Comptroller Stringer And CALPERS Urge ‘Vote No’ Campaign At Duke Energy
NEW YORK, NY -New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, on behalf of the New York City Pension Funds, and CALPERS, the California Public Employee Retirement Systems, filed an exempt solicitation letter with the SEC urging shareholders to vote against four members of Duke Energy’s Board of Directors who have demonstrated poor oversight of the company’s environmental compliance.
The four directors, G. Alex Bernhardt, Sr., James B. Hyler, Jr., James T. Rhodes, and Carlos A. Saladrigas, are long-term members of Duke Energy’s Regulatory Policy and Operations Committee, which has explicit oversight over issues relating to health, safety and environmental compliance at the company.
Duke Energy is responsible for a devastating environmental disaster in North Carolina, the third largest coal ash spill on record in the United States, which occurred early in February 2014 when a drain under its storage basin collapsed, coating 70 miles of the Dan River with 39,000 tons of toxic waste.
