Statement from NYC Comptroller Lander on Brooklyn Crash That Killed Three Pedestrians in Brooklyn
New York, NY—New York City Comptroller Brad Lander released the following statement in response to the crash that killed a mother and her two young children in Brooklyn:
“Saturday’s crash was not just tragic—it was preventable. Mayor Adams has abandoned Vision Zero and allowed the Reckless Driver Accountability Act, legislation I spearheaded in the Council, to expire without a replacement. The reckless driver responsible for the deaths of a mother and two of her children in Midwood on Saturday accumulated 20 speed camera tickets over the last year—more than enough to trigger accountability under the RDAA if it still existed.
“The Center for Justice Innovation examined the impact of its Driver Accountability Program, the model for my legislation, and the results are clear: participants in the program were consistently less likely to reoffend.
“In this case, license suspension wasn’t enough. The State should immediately pass the Speed Limiters for Repeat Offenders Act, and the City must revive and strengthen the Reckless Driver Accountability Act to catch drivers before tragedy strikes—either to change their behavior or get them off the road completely.”
