Statement from New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer on the Resignation of Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló

July 25, 2019

“When government turns its back on the people, when government caters to cronies at the expense of everyday citizens, and when government mocks and denigrates marginalized groups, the people must rise up. That’s exactly what we saw from Puerto Ricans who demanded accountability for Governor Rosselló’s betrayals of the public trust.

“Over the last eleven days, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans have made their voices heard – in Puerto Rico, in New York City, and across the world. Their movement has inspired all who care passionately about the future of Puerto Rico.

“For me and my family, this moment is deeply personal. I was raised by my Puerto Rican step-father and Puerto Rico has always had a special place in my heart. At this tumultuous moment, there is an opportunity to rebuild and re-imagine this beautiful island we love so much.

“Now that Governor Rosselló has resigned, the Financial Oversight and Management Board should go out the door with him. It’s time for a clean break from the past and for Puerto Rico to turn the page to a new chapter. We can and will move forward in the belief that Puerto Rico’s best days are still to come. Puerto Ricans are rising up for transformational change. Nothing less will do. Puerto Rico se levanta.”
