Statement from New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer on Walmart’s Announcement to Reduce Firearm Sales
“Weapons of war do not belong in our communities. Period. That’s why as shareholders we’ve called on Walmart to completely eliminate its firearms sales, which have little bearing on the company’s overall business and worked to fuel a gun crisis that has spiraled into a national emergency.
“Today, Walmart has taken a constructive step and heeded our request by announcing they would limit sales of ammunition and handguns, and prohibit open carry in their stores. This is a victory for our neighbors and for common sense, and it’s also important for our pensioners and public safety. It shouldn’t have taken this long, and it shouldn’t have taken devastating tragedies to happen, but it is the right thing to do. Our children should not grow up in a world where there’s a handgun on every corner and a silencer in every store. We are not powerless to America’s gun epidemic – we can fight it, and Walmart has stepped up in that fight today.”
