Statement from NYC Comptroller Lander on Mayor Adams’ Rent Hike Proposal

May 1, 2025

New York, NY — New York City Comptroller Brad Lander released the following statement:

“Mayor Eric Adams launched a direct assault on working-class New Yorkers, proposing not one—but two—devastating rent hikes that will drive more working families into financial instability and homelessness.

“Adams wants to raise the rent burden on families who rely on CityFHEPS housing vouchers from 30% to 40% of their income. A single parent earning minimum wage, equating to $34,260 a year, would see her annual rent rise from $10,000 to $14,000, making it impossible to cover food and child care, and pushing families right back into homelessness.

“Meanwhile, Adams’ Rent Guidelines Board voted to jack up rents on over a million rent-stabilized tenants—a 7.75% increase over two years adds nearly a whole month’s rent to pay each year. Where does Adams expect people to get a whole extra month’s rent when wages are stagnant and cost of living keeps rising?

“These proposals will make the city less affordable, increase evictions, and push families into homelessness.”
