Statement from NYC Comptroller Lander on Writers Guild and AMPTP Reaching Tentative Agreement
New York, NY — New York City Comptroller Brad Lander released the following statement on reports of a tentative agreement between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
“After nearly five months on the picket line, television and film studios have finally recognized the irreplaceable contributions of writers. I applaud the Writers Guild for their tenacity in reaching a tentative agreement. Their dedication to securing a fair contract is a testament to the power of collective action and solidarity in the entertainment industry. Studios are getting the message: supporting and valuing the creative talents behind the scenes is essential for the industry’s long-term success.
“Studios must now engage constructively with SAG-AFTRA as actors continue to advocate for their fair treatment and pay on the picket line. Ignoring the needs and demands of these dedicated professionals is not only a financial and reputational risk, but also a failure to recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of those whose labor makes entertainment possible and generates long-term shareholder value.”
Comptroller Lander previously sent letters to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish on behalf of the five New York City pension funds expressing his concerns about the economic and market impacts of the strike and urging the company to fairly negotiate with WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
