Statement from NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer on Majority Support for Climate Change Proposal at Exxon’s Annual Meeting

May 31, 2017

(New York, NY) — Today, ExxonMobil’s shareowners cast 62 percent of their votes in support of a proposal co-filed by the New York City Pension Funds, and led by the New York State Common Retirement System and the Church of England, urging the company to report on the risks associated with climate change. Comptroller Stringer released the following statement in response:

“Today, we’re on our way to a sustainable, low-carbon future — it’s inevitable. Yet, ExxonMobil has ignored investors’ concerns about climate change for too long. Today’s vote sends a clear message — the Exxon Board needs to take a hard look today at what a greener tomorrow looks like. Continuing to rebuff investors is no longer an option.”
