Statement Of New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer On The Passage Of The Gender Neutral Bathroom Bill
“Every New Yorker, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves equal access to public facilities – and that includes public restrooms. At a time when other states are limiting the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming Americans, New York City is taking the lead on equal protection and equal rights. This common sense reform will reduce the potential for harassment, discrimination, and violence against our City’s transgender residents. I want to thank Council Member Dromm for championing this legislation, and I urge the Mayor to sign it without delay.”
A bill requiring single-use bathrooms in New York City to be labeled as gender neutral was first proposed by New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer in a report released last June which highlighted the difficulties faced by many transgender and gender non-conforming individuals when using public restrooms. Later that summer, Council Member Daniel Dromm formally introduced Intro 871. Today, the bill passed the City Council.
