Sample Timesheet

This timesheet template is provided for workers to manually track the hours they work. To spot and prevent wage theft, it is critical that workers prioritize writing down their working hours and any breaks as part of a daily routine. This practice allows workers to compare the hours they work to the payment they receive. They can confirm whether they are being paid for every hour that they worked, and whether they are being paid overtime hours if they worked more than 40 hours in a workweek.

It is also crucial for workers to track their employer’s name and contact information. In some cases, a supervisor or manager may be a different person from the company, agency, or business owner. If the employer doesn’t pay a worker for work performed, it is necessary to have their name and contact information to be able to take any measures to demand payment. If the employer refuses to share their contact information, the worker can write down their vehicle license plate number, which may be used to identify the owner. Similarly, depending on the industry, some work may take place in multiple locations. Thus, it is important to track information such as job site address, if applicable. The worker can take a photograph of nearby street signs and landmarks, which may help identify the work location if the employer does not share the address.

The United States Department of Labor (US DOL) has a Timesheet app that workers can use on their phones. Access the US DOL Timesheet app here: Track Your Hours: Just Tap the App | U.S. Department of Labor (dol.gov).
