Energy

Moving toward a clean energy future

NYC has the dirtiest energy grid within the state because a significant amount of NYC’s energy comes from power plants located in the city that largely rely on fossil fuels. Greening our energy grid requires us to significantly ramp up renewable energy generation, increase transmission capacity to deliver renewable energy to NYC, and phase out fossil fuels. NYC has also set ambitious targets to reach 1,000 MW of solar power by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2040. New York City stands to benefit from the deployment of offshore wind currently being staged from a new world-class offshore wind port in South Brooklyn.

Clean energy jobs continue to expand across NYS, with strongest growth in sectors like building decarbonization, energy efficiency and renewables deployment. In New York City, while overall clean energy job growth is more modest, building retrofits and electrification remain a major and growing source of local employment, reflecting the scale of the City’s transition to cleaner more efficient buildings.
